Accomplishments
Dr. Sen started his career as a Scientist in CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), Kolkata and held the position of Chief Scientist since the year 2008. He had the privilege of heading both Glass Division and Fiber Optics and Photonics Division
of the institute. Being from the Engineering discipline, the prime focus of his activity was technology development. In this endeavor, he guided the development and transfer of a number of technologies/products and established active collaboration with industries; completing and energizing the innovation chain.
-
As head of an expert group of R&D personnel in Glass Division, he led a number of major
programmes on indigenous technology development and pilot scale production of specialty glasses
such as Nd-doped laser glass, glass beads for nuclear waste immobilization, high
density glass for radiation protection etc. His contribution spurred India’s commercial
production of specialty glass beads to meet DAE’s requirement. He also played a major role in diversifying the activities in
the frontier areas of chalcogenide glass for niche applications and energy efficient
microwave melting of glasses.
Dr. Sen had always strived to get through technological challenges looking towards national
need and making the country self-reliant in vital sectors. At the same, he gave priority to achieve excellence by
initiating research in new fields in tune with the global activity. He had also contributed
significantly in manpower training and skill development.
-
He had been associated with the Fiber Optics and Photonics Division of the institute for about
35 years. His stewardship of this Division resulted in establishment of a state-of-the-art
facility for producing specialty optical fibers for several niche applications and brought
global recognition to the institute. Later on, the activity had been expanded to fiber based
components and devices. Further, he had put a major effort in indigenous
capability building in the frontier area of high power fiber lasers for industrial and medical
applications. In all these developments, he worked in close unison with industries, user organizations and reputed
institutions both in India and abroad.

-
As the IP Coordinator of CSIR-CGCRI for more than 10 years, Dr. Sen was able to maintain a good portfolio of IP
for the institute and rejuvenate the activities of the IP Cell through a systematic approach of reviewing / filing the inventions. In this endeavor, he also took an active role in facilitating the process of technology transfer to the user organizations / industries.
